RENT 20th ANNIVERSARY TOUR
Bringing together survivors, families and friends
of the PULSE Orlando shooting
Daytona Beach, FL – August 31, 2016… RENT and the performing arts is one of the ways that people are reaching out to one another and to heal. RENT is the first show of Peabody Daytona’s Broadway Season and plays October 6, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. QLatinx is putting together a group for RENT with Peabody’s wonderful Group Sales Rates. And, tickets have been donated by The Peabody and Broadway’s Robert’s Group and members of The Peabody Foundation Board of Directors.
QLatinx was founded by and for the survivors, families, and friends of the Pulse Orlando shooting - a moment that shook their lives with the horrors of violence, leaving in its wake the need to come together as a community to grieve, heal, and rebuild the type of society they deserve. Their belief is that it’s possible to wake tomorrow from this nightmare.
RENT and the performing arts is one of the ways they will reach out to one another and to heal. As QLatinx, they see this opportunity to bring their community allies to see RENT as another medium to convey their message that together they can “give into love rather than live in fear,” said Isabelle Sousa-Rodriguez, QLatinx Advisor. “They can be an us for once, instead of a them.”
In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.
Lloyd Bowers, President of The Peabody Foundation commented, “The City of Daytona Beach and the Peabody Auditorium Foundation are honored to be sponsoring and supporting victims and their families of the Pulse Nightclub tragedy and QLatinix, a safe haven for LGBTQ Latina/o residents that were impacted by the tragic events of that night, with their inaugural 2016 – 2017 Broadway in Daytona Beach production of Rent on October 6, 2016. Although theater exists primarily to entertain, it also has the ability to both comfort and heal. The City and the Foundation hope that this evening of entertainment will bring comfort and healing to all who were affected by this tragedy.”
“The City of Daytona Beach has been active hosting a Candlelight Vigil and concert event for the Pulse victims and their families and friends at the beautiful Oceanfront Bandshell,” said Peabody’s Executive Director Helen Riger. “We are supportive of our LGBTQ community, as well as the community in general, and are always participating throughout the year with silent auctions and other special events for various charities.”
“Thank you for the ways The Peabody is helping to bring us together as we grieve those we have lost and remember the love that they have shared with us,” said Isabelle. “As RENT will always remind us, we've got to remember the love.”
